Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini, also known as Fuwa are the official mascots for the Beijing Olympics 2008.

Their color and inspiration carry messages of friendship and peace, as well as good wishes from China. Their color and inspiration come from the Five Olympic Rings and have been created inspired on China’s most popular animals, the fish, the panda, the Tibetan antelope, the swallow and the Olympic flame.

Beibei is the fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow. When you put their names together it means "Welcome to Beijing."

Beibei is the fish and it carries the blessing of prosperity. Her color blue symbolizing the blue Olympic ring and water wave designs are a symbol of prosperity and harvest. In Chinese culture, the fish is also a symbol for surplus, another measure of a good year and a good life. Beibei is known to be gentle, pure and strong in water sports.

Jingjing is the Panda of the Fuwa and brings the blessing of happiness wherever he goes. His black and white fur symbolizes a national treasure and a protected species. The lotus designs on his headdress, symbolize the lush forest and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Jingjing represents the black Olympic ring, he is charmingly naïve and optimistic.

IOC chief: Olympics in 'crisis' over torch chaos

BEIJING - IOC president Jacques Rogge said Thursday the turmoil surrounding the Beijing torch relay and the politically charged buildup to the Summer Games posed a "crisis'' for the Olympic movement. Rogge urged China to respect its "moral engagement'' to improve human rights and to fulfill promises of greater media freedom. He reaffirmed the right of free speech for athletes at the Beijing Games.
